Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) explained the erroneous nature of the actions of some of the Salaf and how their actions were opposed or shunned by the majority of the Prophet’s Companions, or the most senior scholars among them, and how such actions were opposed to the Prophetic traditions which provide clear guidance in this subject area.
