Takfīr (Excommunication)

Exaggeration in takfīr (the judgement of expelling a person from Islām) is a hallmark of the Khārijite ideology. They expel Muslims from Islām on account of both what is not a sin (and actually permitted in Islām) and what is a sin. They also make broad, generalised, unrestricted judgements of takfīr upon whole societies or institutions. They have dubious principles through which judgements of takfīr are widened and extended beyond the initial target. In addition, they do not excuse Muslims who err and fall into acts of sin or even disbelief on account of ignorance, compulsion, genuine error or faulty interpretation. Their statements, verdicts and actions provide clear testimony for this. Though many of their leaders deny this verbally, their pronouncements, rulings and actions contradict their claims. There is in the vast body of Salafī authorship and literature, past and present, detailed refutations of their misguidance in this respect.
